When a postcard arrives from Uncle Chente saying that he will visit Texas on the Fourth of July, the Cárdenas family happily awaits his visit. To celebrate his visit, they plan a picnic with an array of Tejano food. First the family plans the food, ideal for a Texas picnic, and then they plan the decorations. The only thing they can't plan for is the weather. Just before Uncle Chente arrives, Mother Nature threatens to rain out all their summer fun. The kids panic at the prospect of Uncle Chente's arrival on a rainy day. But, the kids soon discover that it takes more than a summer thunderstorm to ruin a beautiful day of fun-filled stories and time spent together. In the tradition of their previous collaboration, Family, Familia, illustrator Pauline Rodriguez Howard and Gonzales Bertrand bring children aged 3 to 7 a story about family bonds so strong that even a rainy day makes for the perfect picnic.
School Library Journal : K-Gr 2-Uncle Chente drives a big truck and is often out of town. When he sends a card announcing that he will be visiting the C rdenas family on the Fourth of July, they are thrilled. A backyard barbecue and fireworks viewing are planned. When a huge rainstorm and power outage squash the original agenda, the relatives find a different way to celebrate. This quiet book shows a real delight in family. The texts create enough mild tension to keep readers engaged. Lovely, soft, colored-pencil drawings executed with a cross-hatching technique give a Seurat-like effect, and the use of light gives a sense of being caught in a great storm. Pair this with Mary Sue Galindo's Icy Watermelon/Sandia fria (Pinata, 2000) for a fun family storytime.
Listen to Vienna Rose read Uncle Chentes Picnic to you. A marvelous example of the magical encounter between a child and books that we wish for all children.
