A touching, bilingual ode to a young boy’s hard-working parents.
“Chee-ree, chee’ree, chee-re! The birds tweet their morning songs,” so begins this celebration of a young boys parents, whom he calls heroes of the harvest. The rhythmic verse follows them from the early morning chirping birds through when the whistle blows in the fields where they work to when they come home and wrap their adoring son in their arms. Complemented by sun-drenched illustrations in vibrant fall colors, this bilingual picture book rings with a sonorous ode to a young boy’s parents. This is a celebration of both the harvest season and the strong bonds of a close-knit family.
Listen to Vienna Rose read My Parents Heroes of the Harvest to you. A marvelous example of the magical encounter between a child and books that we wish for all children.
School Library Journal : PreSchool-Grade 1–In romanticized, overblown language, a boy describes a typical day in the lives of his parents, who are farmworkers (Their rakes slide back and forth caressing our mother earth.) From the chirping birds that wake them to the anthropomorphized fruits that are grateful to be picked by them (The strawberries enjoy the feel of my parents hands) and the boys prayer of thanksgiving at dinnertime (Thank you, sweet heaven, for giving me such wonderful parents!), each page is more saccharine than the next. The repetitive use of the Spanish diminutive ending for most proper nouns (wisely not reproduced in the English translations) is cloying. Gómezs highly stylized and powerful illustrations have some artistic merit but seem disconnected from the text.
