Sergio and Noemí venture into the forest to gather firewood for their grandmothers. They come upon a place where dead trees are lying on the ground, and in the center, they see one “huge, hollow tree” that beckons them. Inside, the children find a tiny, green, glowing branch. When Sergio gives the branch a sharp tug, a woman with flowing black hair and red eyes appears in their midst.  The children soon discover that they have been transported to the land of the riddles, and the woman challenges them to a battle using words as weapons. If the children win, she will free all the children who have been changed into the dead trees scattering the ground outside, but if she wins, the children will meet a similar fate. Brother and sister accept the challenge, and drawing upon exchanges of advinanzas—or riddles—with their grandmothers, they prove a worthy match for the woman in the woods.  César Villarreal Elizondo and illustrator Anthony Accardo team up to craft a story that will inspire readers aged 3 to 7 to learn the art of adivinanzas and to create their own. Like the fantastical branch, Villarreal Elizondo’s story glows with the value of oral traditions that are passed on from generation to generation.
