Pepita's back! And she is as obstinate as ever. Pepita likes green, yellow, blue, ... even gray! But she can't stand pink. And despite the urgings of friends and family, Pepita just can't bring herself to make friends with her new neighbor Sonya, a little girl with a pink dress, pink balloons, yuck--pink everything.
Pepita's back! And the young heroine of Pepita Talks Twice/Pepita habla dos veces (a Skipping Stones Honor Book) is as obstinate as ever. Pepita likes green, yellow, blue, red, brown, purple. . . even gray! But she can't stand pink. And despite the urgings of her friend Mr. Hobbs, her brother Juan, and the rest of her family, Pepita just can't bring herself to make friends with her new neighbor Sonya, a little girl with a pink dress, pink balloons, yuck-pink everything. Beautifully illustrated in hues of every color—and yes, lots of pink—the enchanting partnership of Dumas Lachtman and Pardo DeLange works its magic once again. In the first installment of the series, Pepita discovered how valuable it can be to "talk twice," to appreciate the marvel of speaking two languages. But in this bilingual book for children aged 3 to 7, she learns how important it can be to think twice, too. More importantly, she learns that the things that make us different from one another are the very things that can make a friendship twice as nice.
Listen to Vienna Rose read Pepita Thinks Pink to you. A marvelous example of the magical encounter between a child and books that we wish for all children.
School Library Journal L Kindergarten-Grade 2-A poorly executed picture book. Pepita dislikes pink. In her stubborn stance against the color, she must overcome her near phobia to accept the friendship of a neighbor who, ironically, captures the quintessential essence of pink from head to toe. Forced and didactic in its delivery in English and in Spanish, this lesson in acceptance of all people of all colors is illustrated with garish and crude cartoons. Unattractive overall.
