Many children—and quite a few grown-ups, too—know the delicious taste of bizcochitos. (Indeed, the bizcochitohas the unusual distinction of being the official “state cookie” of New Mexico!) But how many people know the secret of how the bizcochito first came to be? Ana Baca does, and she shares it with us in a charming fable, Benito’s Bizcochitos / Los bizcochitos de Benito. The book concludes with a bizcochito recipe that adventurous young readers may enjoy trying out with the help of a friendly adult—or, perhaps, vice versa.
Listen to Vienna Rose read Benitos Bizcochitos to you. A marvelous example of the magical encounter between a child and books that we wish for all children.
School Library Journal :
Kindergarten-Grade 3-As they do their holiday baking, Grandmother tells Cristina
the story of the little girl's great-grandfather. When he was a boy, Benito ran
away from his parents' farm. A magical giant butterfly helped him realize how
much he missed his home and gave him a piece of sweet bread, resulting in the
family tradition of making butterfly-shaped cookies at Christmastime. A row of
geometric designs separates the English text from the Spanish translation that
lies below. These designs, and the part-cartoon, part-realistic paintings that
appear opposite the texts, add little to the awkwardly written story. Skip this
rather odd little cookie, and opt instead for one of the many higher-quality
bilingual picture books that exist. Gary Soto's Too Many Tamales (Putnam, 1993)
is a much better Hispanic holiday selection.
The Dallas Morning News, May 2000: "A fantastic, imaginative story . . . Readers will definitely want to bake
the famous cookies . . . A recipe is included."
