A traditional Cuban folk tale retold in a bilingual format and relocated to the Little Havana section of Miami. The book features delightful illustrations by acclaimed illustrator Lulu Delacre, who used hundreds of photo studies to recreate this authentically magical environment where roosters wear tuxedos and animals rule the roost. The audiobook is read by author Lucia Gonzalez in an authentically Cuban style brings this classic Latin American folk tale to life. The notes at the end of the story, included in the audio recording add insight into Cuban American cultural traditions.
School Library Journal : Preschool-Grade 2—A bossy little rooster is on his way to his uncle's wedding when he spies some corn on the ground, which he pecks up. Now he has a dirty beak. Will the grass clean it for him? No, so he asks the goat to eat the grass, then the stick to hit the goat, then the fire to burn the stick, and so forth in this cumulative traditional Cuban tale set in the Little Havana section of Miami, Florida. Lucia Gonzalez reads her own retelling (Scholastic, 1994) with verve and unique voices for each character. There's lively background music with a Caribbean beat, and even a jaunty page-turn signal. The time listed for the program includes all six tracks—including an introduction; bilingual readings both with and without page-turn signals; a choice of either Spanish or English narration; and a bilingual final track, "About the Story." This is a fun, bouncy tale with a text that has some interior rhymes, an interesting rhythm, and plenty of Spanish words tossed in, even in the English-language version. It should make a good listening center.
