Author's Note : The books in this collection were among the first books I published in the United States as individual trade books.  It has been great fun to see them reprinted over and over, and to ascertain that children continue to enjoy them as much as when they were first published.  The outstanding illustrations by Viví Escrivá have contributed immensely to their appeal.  I particularly rejoice in the fact that they have been published as big books –the size not only enhances the beauty of the art, but it especially allows teachers to duplicate to a certain extent the powerful experience of being read aloud.  The books have been complemented with CDs or cassettes, giving the children an additional experience of enjoying these texts in a musical format through the genius of Suni Paz and her delightful voice.  The twelve books of this series are some of my best well known books among bilingual teachers and their students. They are also very dear to my heart since the inspiration for most of them comes from my own children’s childhood.  Teachers constantly comment on the fact that many of the stories lend them selves to present or support curricular themes with out losing their interest as stories.

How the Rainbow Came to Be

The author magically combines scientific facts with a fable about cooperation in this enchanting tale. In the beginning, Earth has no color until Red, Blue, and Yellow decide that a gray planet is unsightly. Eventually they each realize the importance of mixing their separate hues in order to create a colorful planet. Excellent for discussing cooperation, solidarity, and the value of diversity, this book is also a great springboard for exploring primary and secondary colors.

In the aftermath of a storm, a plucky seed survives and teaches readers about how seeds become flowers.  With the help of the Sun and the cooperation of Wind, Clouds, and Rain, a little seed grows up to be a beautiful plant. A delightful and moving tale in its own right, the story is also a vivid portrayal of the water cycle and the cycle of the seasons.
