Amigos
Friends
Teachers of young children appreciate that through this story children learn, or practice, the names of colors, the concept of sizes, and, of course, the different geometrical shapes. Children seem to be touched by the deep message of the story.
This powerful tale
of celebration of diversity is presented in two versions. Alma Flor Ada reads
the narrative version as originally published. Suni Paz presents the musical
rendition of the story as rewritten in verse form by Alma Flor. Suni’s
beautiful performance gives additional charm to this poignant story of
multicultural understanding.
Author’s Note : It has been a great joy to listen to young children tell me how much they like this book, and how good it makes them feel that the book recognizes that we can all be friends, regardless of how we look like. This is the second of my stories with geometrical characters. The first is El cuadradito azul [The little blue square]. In that first story a little blue square wishes he could be any other figure, a circle or an oval, but not a square, until his grandmother points out to him all the potentials that he holds. The third book with geometrical figures as characters is El reino de la geometría which takes the results of discrimination a step further. Amigos was my very first book published in the United States as an Individual trade book, and it started my association as an author with Santillana. This powerful tale of celebration of diversity has been read both in English and in Spanish by Alma Flor Ada. The listeners of the recording in Spanish will have a complementary experience. Alma Flor has rewritten the story in verse and Suni Paz has created music for the version in verse. Her beautiful performance gives additional charm to this poignant story of multicultural understanding.
School Library Journal : An introduction to basic shapes featuring brightly colored illustrations. Squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles are limited to playing and associating only with others just like themselves, until they discover the creative possibilities of being friends with those who are different. In the end, the various shapes combine to make wagons, locomotives, and boats.
Creative
Dialogue
These
questions are samples that can prompt the dialogue for each phase. Of course,
the beauty of the real dialogue is that it will incorporate real life situations
and experiences of the children. The questions are only suggested as dialogue
starters. They need not be asked separately, but in a normal conversation
format. We separated them into phases to give an idea of the different
purpose of each phase, particularly because the conversations in the class tend
to remain at the Descriptive and Personal phases and not reach the very
important Critical Refletive phase and the essential Creative Phase that leads
to action.
Descriptive
Phase
Questions to ascertain
the comprehension of the story and its concepts.
How many sides does a square have? Are all sides the same size? How many sides does a rectangle have? A triangle? Do circles have sides? What did
the large figures say to the little ones?
Personal
Interpretive Phase
Questions to invite sharing personal experiences, feelings and emotions. How does
it feel when other children want to play with you? When they don’t?
How does it feel when other people treat you badly? When you treat others badly?
Critical
Multicultural Anti-Bias Phase
Questions to promote critical reflection and anti-bias awareness.
Was the big squares’ reason to forbid the little ones to play with
others valid? Why?
Do all people who have long hair (or live in the same street) think alike? Have
the same taste? Can we tell the feelings of a person just by the way the person
looks? By the person’s language? The person’s origin? What do you think of
this?
Why do you think the shapes had such a wonderful time playing together?
What difficult things that can happen when people who are different play
together?
What good things can happen? How can we promote the good things?
Transformative
Creative Phase
Questions to promote transformative attitudes.
What can we do when there are children who do not want to play with us?
What can you do if you see someone treating someone badly?
Is there someone you have not been friends with that you can invite to play with
you? Someone you can learn to know better?
Connections
with the Home
Invite parents to
share with their children their own experiences with friends, now and when they
were children. What were their favorite games and activities? Ask them to
discuss their concept of friendship. What do they value in their friends? Can
these qualities be found only in people of the same age, the same sex, the same
language, the same ethnicity?
Canto del mosquito
The Song of the
Teeny Tiny Mosquito
Early one morning a mosquito is swallowed by a frog, who in turn is eaten by a fish, who in turn... This original cumulative tale has a surprise ending that delights all readers. An excellent way to introduce the concept of the food chain, it is a joy to read, to tell, to chant, or to turn into a play.
The original music created by Suni Paz compliments this whimsical cumulative tale. Her vivid performance captures the listener’s imagination until it seems that the mosquito is buzzing right in our ears.
Author's Note : On the back cover of the Big Book which accompanies this book, as well as in the CD, I tell the story of having once involuntarily swallowed a mosquito which flew into my mouth as I spoke. Now, I am concerned about the wisdom of such candid statement, since on a school visit a child told me he had enjoyed hearing that I eat bugs! My objective on sharing the genesis of this story was to point out that ideas are all around us, and the smallest event can be the origin of a story. I also like to point out how writing allows us to improve reality. My story let me rescue that poor mosquito of long ago. The original music created by Suni Paz compliments this whimsical cumulative tale. Her vivid performance captures the listener’s imagination until it seems that the mosquito is buzzing right in our ears.
Como nacio el arco iris
How the Rainbow Came to Be
The author magically combines scientific facts with a fable about cooperation in this enchanting tale. In the beginning, Earth has no color until Red, Blue, and Yellow decide that a gray planet is unsightly. Eventually they each realize the importance of mixing their separate hues in order to create a colorful planet. Excellent for discussing cooperation, solidarity, and the value of diversity, this book is also a great springboard for exploring primary and secondary colors.
Despues de la
tormenta
After the Storm
In the aftermath of a storm, a plucky seed survives and teaches readers about how seeds become flowers. With the help of the Sun and the cooperation of Wind, Clouds, and Rain, a little seed grows up to be a beautiful plant. This story about the cycle of growth also lends itself to discussions of cooperation and interconnectedness.
Hamaca de la
vaca
In the Cows Backyard
"There's always room for one more" is the message of this simple fable. In this delightful cumulative tale, many animals gather on the hammock in the cow’s backyard. The arrival of the elephant poses a problem… but this story proves that "When there is goodwill / there’s always a way / for one more / to squeeze in and play!".
Jaula dorada
Golden Cage
A little boy's search for the perfect gift for his grandmother teaches him about ingenuity, generosity, and freedom. A grandson’s desire to find the best gift for his grandmother results in an exploration of giving, love, and freedom. A good story for discussing extended families, as well as illness and disabilities.
Me
gustaria tener
How Happy I Would Be
Surprise-filled illustrations awaken children’s imaginations and inspire their creativity. Many teachers tell us how much their students love this book, and how motivated the students are to make their own books following this pattern.
Suni Paz has created original music for this cumulative book of rhyming words. Her whimsical rendition will charm all listeners.
Author's Note : To
play with rhyme and to imagine unique situations give
No fui yo
It Wasnt Me
Who's responsible for trampling the flowers and other naughty deeds? It's not who you think. In this Valentine’s Day story, a young child shows his love for his mother. The very easy text makes the book suitable for early readers and second language learners.
No quiero derretirme
I Dont Want to Melt
A snowman who doesn't want to melt in a fable about water and cycles of birth, death, and rebirth. Sometimes fate seems inevitable, as in the case of the snowman who must melt when Spring arrives. But his friends-the birds, the squirrels, and the mice family-all come up with a special plan to help the snowman. A delightful and moving tale in its own right, the story is also a vivid portrayal of the water cycle and the cycle of the seasons.
Papalote
Kite
Making and flying a kite seems to be more than a mother and her children can handle. But looking for alternatives is always a good idea. Both good and bad events occur when a mother decides to make a kite for her four children. This disarming story provides a pattern that children can follow to create their own books. It is also a natural opportunity to discover that families come in different shapes and sizes, as the class explores how family traditions are passed on through generations.
Pavo para la cena de gracias No gracias
Turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner No Thanks
A spider helps a turkey find a unique way to avoid being eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. When the turkey overhears a conversation about how fat and tasty he will be on Thanksgiving, he loses his own appetite. Fortunately, he meets a young spider who remembers that her grandmother’s great grandmother once saved a young pig’s life. The spider then sets out to find a way to save the turkey. Makes a great companion to Charlotte’s Web.
Pinata vacia
Empty Pinata
The gift of an empty piñata provides an opportunity for a young girl to learn about unselfishness. An empty piñata provides the occasion for this gentle tale of sharing, generosity and reciprocity. Elena spends all of her pocket money buying presents for others... How will her piñata get filled?
Quien
nacera aqui
Whos Hatching Here
The reader is invited to guess, based on the poems and illustrations, what animal will hatch from each set of eggs. Children will delight in guessing, as well as in the freshness of the rhymes and the exciting watercolors. In the process, they also learn about the many animals that start their lives as eggs. Some teachers have even ordered extra copies just to frame the outstanding illustrations!
This predictable text
invites children to guess, through the clues in the rhyming text,
who will be the next animal hatching from a certain group of eggs.
On her performance of the music she created Suni incorporates
special sound effects to contribute to the predictable clues.
Author's Note : My son Miguel had great fascination for birds. He loved watching and studying them. We even got to raise two wild birds, fallen from their nests, first a blue jay, later a robin. Many years later, as an adult, my daughter Rosalma was able to raise a bird who felt out of next in front on her house. Raising baby birds is not an easy task, and many times proves unsuccessful, but what a joy when they manage to survive. This predictable book invites children to guess, through the clues in the rhyming text, who will be the next animal hatching from a certain group of eggs. On her performance of the music Suni created for this book she incorporates special sound effects to con tribute to the predictable clues.
Rosa alada
Rose with Wings
Gabriel has chosen to talk about a caterpillar in school. The caterpillar doesn't do much all day though, until one day…All of the children in the class have chosen a special animal for their project, but Gabriel only has a caterpillar... or does he? A poetic rendition of the miracle of transformation.
Sorpresa de Mama Coneja
Surprise for Mother Rabbit
Mother Rabbit's brood decide to surprise her with Easter eggs from various animals. When the bunnies decide to help their mother gather eggs for Easter, they discover the richness of diversity. Bird lovers will appreciate the opportunity to familiarize their students with many different kinds of birds and their eggs, and everyone will welcome this celebration of diversity and multiculturalism.
Susto de los fantasmas
What are Ghosts Afraid of
Two ghosts scared of a storm? Who ever heard of such a thing? They find the perfect hiding place. On Halloween night, it is easy to mistake forgotten curtains and sheets waving on the clothesline for ghosts. But what about real ghosts? Maybe they, too, are afraid of the children that might discover them!
Una
extrana visita
Strange Visitors
Each day of the week a new set of visitors appears, bringing with them rhythm and joy. A wonderful book for choral reading and play acting. Children learn the days of the week as a game and become acquainted with different animals and musical instruments. In this cumulative tale different animals appear each day of the week, each playing a different instrument until they all join in a wonderful Sunday jarana. The recording, done by a talented duo of a mother and her young daughter, presents the instruments in a joyful way that will facilitate that children learn to recognize their sound. The young listeners can join the daughter in her responses making the listening an interactive experience.

Author's Note : Writing this book was a pleasurable exercise. I wrote it specifically before a visit to a first grade class in Santa Barbara, California. I wanted to bring the children a model that they could use to create their own books. It’s been a true satisfaction to see through the years how many other classes have used the book for the same purpose. And a joy to witness how many children know the text by heart and delight repeating it.
