Albert,
the indomitable, hardworking, dedicated duck who has appeared in seven previous
books by Leslie Tryon, has been a busy duck indeed. He has built an alphabet for
the school playground (Albert's Alphabet), directed the school play (Albert's
Play), organized a school field trip (Albert's Field Trip), and coached the
Pleasant Valley baseball team (Albert's Ballgame). He has helped with the big
Thanksgiving celebration (Albert's Thanksgiving), gathered the kids together to
meet a special visitor on Christmas Eve (Albert's Christmas), and solved the
mystery of the missing pumpkins (Albert's Halloween). And now it's time
for Albert to be celebrated in return. It's his birthday, and Patsy Pig has
organized his surprise party as only she can, right down to the last detail. But
will the one detail she forgets ruin the whole affair? Once again Leslie
Tryon brings us Albert and the Pleasant Valley gang in a story full of warmth
and humor, accompanied by her marvelously detailed artwork.
Listen to Vienna Rose read
Albert's Birthday to you. A marvelous example of the magical encounter
between a child and books that we wish for all children.
School Library Journal :
Kindergarten-Grade 2-Albert the duck and his friends return, but this time,
instead of him doing all the work, Patsy Pig has organized a surprise
celebration for Albert's "all-grown-up" birthday. The animals pitch in
with hats and cards, but, unfortunately, the ultra-organized Patsy has forgotten
to invite the guest of honor. The party goes on the road, finally catching up
with Albert in the barn at the apple farm. Children will enjoy the party
preparations and the detailed pen-and-ink with watercolor illustrations.
Booklist : When Patsy Pig decides to throw her best friend, Albert the duck, a
surprise birthday party, she wants it to be perfect. Soon Patsy has the Pleasant
Valley gang creating festive party hats, an accordion card, and even a
flower-pot layer cake. Patsy has only forgotten one detail--to invite the guest
of honor. The eighth Albert title combines a charming story of friendship and
folly with inspiring craft ideas. The prose is personable and engaging, and
colorful, exquisitely detailed illustrations portray the animal cast in such
familiar human settings as a classroom and a town. Children will enjoy Albert's
"photo album" and the seek-and-find surprises in the activity-filled
pictures. Craft how-to's and examples are incorporated into the story, and,
excluding the more complex cake, are easy to do. Tryon emphasizes good
intentions and having fun rather than perfection, a nice message for young ones.
A delightful multipurpose book, sure to be frequently requested for classroom
and home use.
